ABOUT
Bishu is located west of Aichi prefecture and southwest of Gifu prefecture, placing it in the center of Japan. The area has flourished as the largest center of woolen textile production in Japan, accounting for about 60% of domestic production, and is known as one of the world's three high-quality woolen textile production areas, along with Huddersfield, UK, and Biella, Italy. However, this industry has been declining due to lower-cost textile production, an aging workforce, and business management succession issues. To boost the industry, 11 young successor managers of the region’s textile companies gathered and started an experience-driven annual factory tour event called “Bishu Hitsuji Summit” in 2021. Since then, various positive effects have been seen, such as drawing visitors nationwide, being featured in major media outlets, and developing collaborative products with a popular luxury fashion brand.
